Nutrition or Food as Medicine?
Let thy food be thy medicine, let medicine be thy food and "You are what you eat" are probably two of the best known quotations which come to mind when we think of food as medicinal. The foods we eat are absolutely essential to maintain the health of our body, to strengthen our immune system and increase our sense of well being.
Food has been used as a preventative to disease for many thousands of years. Food is a major determinant of health that is directly under our control, many environmental factors are beyond our control but we can certainly choose what to, and what not to eat, which has a major affect on our body. Many people do not realize the power of foods as medicine.
We have to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions and that includes food and what we chose to eat, good nutrition makes us happy and healthy. Nutrients must be supplied in a way that the body can readily assimilate otherwise they will be of little benefit.
